Workplace Blog Hop

Published by

on

I got tagged by Charles Yallowitz to take part in a blog hop. I’m supposed to attach a picture of my workplace, talk about it, and then tag a few more authors. Most of you who frequent my blog have more than likely heard me talk about my shed at some point or another. Yes, I work in a shed, and I’ve actually had people suggest I write a post about that, sooooo . . . here we are! You can find a little picture of it on my Facebook cover photo, but I’ll put one here too.

This is my shed. ~~>IMG_20130718_111957_586

That bird’s nest is now gone from the lights, and my husband’s Monster can (removed when cleaning out the car and put there for some reason?) is no longer on the ground. Now there’s a different one of his energy drink cans on the ground on the other side of the shed.

Now for the inside . . . Wait for iiiiiiiiiit . . . (If you hear that in Shawn’s voice from Psych, bonus points for you, and me, and we.)

IMG_20140910_123743_606

Now, that might look a mess to everyone else, but it’s totally organized. And it might seem a bit weird in general, but it all works for me. From left to right up top, you have: (One of) My gun(s) (Yes, I work in a shed, OBVIOUSLY I want a gun out here), toilet paper that has been sitting right where it’s sitting for . . . an ungodly length of time, which was what I used before I got myyyy . . . box of tissues (needed both for crying while writing/editing (which happens) and during winter when I’m so cold that my nose is falling off), notes hidden under said box of tissues, highlighters and page dividers, notebook. Those three things under the notebook are pen holders for all my editing pens.

Just below all that from left to right is: A blue little paper organizer that you can only see the corner of. The loose papers are the questions for the video Q&A. Yes, they’re still sitting here waiting. A pack of pens that I got for when my neon ones run out (which I’m using in the Positivity Journal for now). Spent pens that I haven’t put up with all the other spent pens yet. My coffee, my bowl where I put out my cigarettes and hold the butts until throwing away (which I do about fifty times every night *exaggeration). There’s also a flyswatter, the pack of cigarettes I’m currently working on, and the one pen that I’m using for editing (until it runs out). (You can’t see a small thing of post-its for place-keeping (again, for editing) behind my pack of cigarettes.) Down beside the table (to the right of where I sit) is a stack of ‘extra’ paper (on a small table), for when I’m editing and have to add long bits. I use that when I run out of space on the printed pages. (I write sort of big . . .)

Then there’s my laptop case, which is a little bit broken. My knife. Don’t ask me why it’s here. Just makes me feel better to have it where it is. What I call an ‘inky pen’ that is used for addressing envelopes (and doing a few other things), then there’s Herald (my laptop).

That mess of pens near the bottom won’t be there for too much longer (depending on editing). I got a different brand a while back (because I want ALL THE COLORS) and they don’t fit in my holders. So there are those, waiting to be used first for editing (after the current editing pen is finished, obviously). Also a few neons for the PJ (and for writing notes on my hand). (I have a lot of neons because I don’t use them for editing anymore. Hurts my eyes.) An extra pack of cigarettes. Then you have my ‘ash cup’. Yes, I ash in and put cigarettes out in different places when I’m in here.

The only thing that’s not where it’s supposed to be is my phone (Penelope), which is always to the left (*left when I’m sitting, below in the photo) of where that extra pack of cigarettes currently is (at the edge of the table). It’s not there because I used it to take the picture . . .

So yes, all that might look like a mess, and it might be a bit weird. But it works for me. As long as everything is where I need it to be, it prevents me from having little mental fits about how things AREN’T WHERE THEY’RE SUPPOSED TO BE. (I’m weird.) This space is seriously, SERIOUSLY where I am most relaxed in the world. It’s my own little place to (hopefully) not be interrupted, and just get sh- . . . er . . . get stuff done.

(You also can’t see the lengths that were gone to to make the weather tolerable out here. Had to hang up copious amounts of blankets to block off my part of the shed from the rest of it. The AC doesn’t have to cool down the whole place, and the heaters don’t have to heat it up in the winter. Also can’t see a welding helmet full of spent pens, which is about half of my spent editing pens. Also can’t see a lot of other things that aren’t writing related.)

(Note: The reason I felt the need to clarify about EVERYTHING was because everything has its purpose. A pen isn’t just a pen. I use different ones for different things. I’m a bit . . . particular. That’s a nice word for it.)

(Another note: If you can’t tell by the handles up at the very top of the photo, there are all sorts of things in here. Hammers, etc. It is a shed. If you also can’t tell by all the weapons/potential weapons? Yeah, I’ve got a lot of choices for the zompocalypse.)

But yeah, that’s my space. My favoritest space in the world.

Now to tag a few other authors . . .

Jack Flacco

S.L. Lewis

Carrie Rubin

Linda Huber

Robert Tozer

Jason Swearingen

Apologies if anyone has been previously tagged.

Can I just say . . . I was super stoked to be part of this. That might be ridiculous, but it’s the truth.

This blog hop sounds like fun. I love that you write in a shed. Talk about having your own space.

    1. C. Miller Avatar

The shed is seriously so fantastic. I think everyone should have a shed, or at least the equivalent of it. I would lose my mind if I didn’t have my own space.

  2. Charles Yallowitz Avatar

Looks organized to me. Most authors seem to need a little clutter. Though I do wonder how you get anything done in winter since you mentioned it gets very cold. I’m guessing a lot of breaks for warmth.

By the way, I didn’t hear ‘wait for it’ in Shawn’s voice. I always think of Cary Elwes from Robin Hood: Men in Tights when I hear that phrase.

    1. C. Miller Avatar

I’m pretty surprised to hear someone say it looks organized, since there are things sort of strewn about (mostly pens).
Winter is actually MUCH easier to tolerate than summer. I can be up during the day with no issue really (apart from not liking it) in the winter, but I just can’t in the summer. I was driven out of here by the heat several times during a schedule mess up last month. (Which wasn’t great because I was having those motivational issues/general issues at the same time. Definitely didn’t help.) Probably wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t wear pajamas all the time . . .
Winter is . . . interesting. I have to have so many layers on (even with multiple heaters). You should see my hands sometimes. Blue and all. That’s usually when Husband is like, “Yeah, you need to stop working and come in.” Sometimes I listen, most of the time I don’t. This past winter, I had to give up and go in a few times. But the cold is definitely preferable to the heat where working is concerned.

When I think Cary Elwes, I think of The Princess Bride OR Psych. He was hilarious when he was on there. So that even got back to Psych inadvertently. Maybe that’s why they say it on there.
I honestly don’t think I’ve ever watched that full movie. >.>

      1. Charles Yallowitz Avatar

Summer has been brutal. The area I work in gets extremely hot and the ‘landlord’ hates it when I use the air conditioner. At least not until it’s extremely necessary and I’m barely able to function. Maybe heat is worse because it really turns the brain into mush. Do you have any back-up spots in case the weather is totally against you?

I first saw him in Princess Bride and then Men in Tights, so that’s where my mind goes. Mel Brooks movies tend to be more pronounced in my memories. Grew up on his humor along with the Marx Brothers, so I gravitate toward the wordplay.

      2. C. Miller Avatar

It definitely has been brutal. The nights are tolerable, thank goodness. (But the sleep schedule is probably permanently off now.) It’s actually been tolerable here the last week or so. It’s been so nice out that I’ve almost wanted to BE outside. Weird.

Heat turning it to mush is pretty accurate. I don’t have the tolerance to heat that I used to. At least when it’s cold it just freezes the brain slowly, and that’s preferable. lol
And nope, no back up spots. At least not here, and at least not right now.
What do you do when the weather is against you and the ‘landlord’ says no AC?

It’s possible that I’ve seen bits of Men in Tights, but I’m not sure. Did you watch Psych?

      3. Charles Yallowitz Avatar

I’m always having terrible sleep, so it doesn’t make much of a difference to me. It’s starting to cool down now, which is good. I’d work outside if the mosquitoes weren’t still on the prowl.

Heat has always been a rough one for me. I had hoped I’d build up a tolerance when I lived in Florida for 4 years, but it never happened.

I try to keep working through the heat or give up to find a shady corner. Usually right under a ceiling fan while praying the child doesn’t want to play outside in the sun.

I watched Psych for a few seasons and then feel behind.

      4. C. Miller Avatar

Night is usually when I’m awake, so that makes a difference. It cooling down has been SO nice.
I’ve only tried working outside once or twice (a few years ago). It didn’t work out so well. I have to even block out the window behind me in the shed, so I (unfortunately) don’t know that I could ever manage to write outside. Shame.
Do mosquitoes swarm to you? Mosquitoes swarm to me, as do bees (which I’m allergic to) and wasps. Better for me to just stay indoors. >.<

Living in Georgia was HORRIBLE for the heat, so I can only imagine how much worse Florida is, with the humidity.

Loved Psych. It was always just so ridiculous.

      5. Charles Yallowitz Avatar

I used to be a night person. Then I got a child who doesn’t understand the concept of sleeping in or physical exhaustion. 😉

      6. C. Miller Avatar

Yeaaaaaah, I can see how that would change things. XD

      7. Charles Yallowitz Avatar

Yup. Changes everything. Like when they’re home sick and you were hoping to get some editing done, but they’re not sick enough to be a lump. 😀

      8. C. Miller Avatar

Haha. Was that your day yesterday or just an example?

      9. Charles Yallowitz Avatar

That’s my day today. He got a small cold that may have set off a minor asthma episode, which is odd because he doesn’t have asthma. So I have to give him medicine every 4 hours. I’ll probably focus on getting October blog posts done. I have a week’s worth of those to do since I can’t do ‘Monster Maker Fun’ until I call for volunteers.

      10. C. Miller Avatar

Is he feeling better now? 😦
        I hope so.

Really strange for it to set off an asthma episode when he doesn’t have it. O.o

I must’ve missed the Monster Maker Fun thing. What is that?

      11. Charles Yallowitz Avatar

It was really mild, so he was better by the end of Friday. I still have to keep him on the meds until Thursday though. I think they said it because he had a long run of upper respiratory infections 2 years ago. It could be nothing and go away as he ages.

I did the ‘Monster Maker Fun’ in April. I put out a challenge for people to comment with nonsense words and I turned them into something fictional. Here’s a link to the last one:

Monsters, Magic Items, and Thingies from Chris, Jo, Melissa, & Adam

      12. C. Miller Avatar

Well, this answered my question in the last one.
I’m glad to hear he’s better!

I’ll check that post out in a few minutes! 😀

      13. Charles Yallowitz Avatar

        Yeah . . . which post?

      14. C. Miller Avatar

The monsters post that you linked to in a comment. I was going to check it out the other day and I got distracted (probably by writing).
I have it open in a new tab and as soon as I’m done getting through these comments, I’ll get straight to it. 🙂

      15. Charles Yallowitz Avatar

No rush. The new one pops up this Saturday. 🙂

      16. C. Miller Avatar

With the rate I’m going with catching up on these comments, I’ll be able to read that one along with the new one. *handface*
(There was a lot of WITH in that sentence. *sigh*)

      17. Charles Yallowitz Avatar

You could always skip a few. 🙂 Honestly, it’s a simple thing. Just leave 1-3 strange, fictional words and I’ll turn them into creatures during the last week of October. 🙂

      18. C. Miller Avatar

        Skip a few comments? O.O
I don’t know that I could. I can barely force myself to do that when I know the other person wouldn’t mind.

I’m so glad I finally caught those posts. It was really cool seeing the descriptions you thought of. (It’s just a really cool idea for a recurring post in general.) 😀

      19. Charles Yallowitz Avatar

Glad you liked them. Not sure what to say about the comments. I’ve had to do brief responses at times when I’m in the middle of something. Like 1-2 sentences stemming from my brain spinning since I’m always balancing multiple things.

      20. C. Miller Avatar

I can usually only keep myself down to one or two sentences when I don’t feel like there’s very much to go on. Otherwise, I can’t help it, and they end up being mini-novels. >.<

Is that how you manage to keep up with all this?

      21. Charles Yallowitz Avatar

That tends to be the case. It’s the method that seems to work without me killing myself.

  3. asouthernceliac Avatar

My aunt is a painter and paints in a shed. I’ll have to let her know she’s not the only one who works in a shed, haha!

    1. C. Miller Avatar

You have no idea how exciting it is for me to know I’m not alone with that. haha
I usually get the, “You work in a shed?” question. Like, “Did I hear (*read*) that right?”
      XD

      1. asouthernceliac Avatar

See I didn’t think it was weird at all when I read your post. Between you and my aunt, I’m convinced I need to revamp the huge useless building in my back yard and use it for my crafting projects! 🙂

      2. C. Miller Avatar

        😀

If you like having your space, you should totally do it. Also a good way to look at it is that it wouldn’t take up space in your house. (For your crafts.) 🙂

  4. authorleighmichaels Avatar

Loved this! I have my organization that looks like a mess to everyone too. And particular? We should meet. HAHA. Oh, and I totally heard “wait for it…” in Shawn’s voice.

    1. C. Miller Avatar

      Thanks!
It’s sort of funny how something can look like a mess but will be EXACTLY the way someone wants it.
I WOULD say I’m persnickety (that word has been a source of discussion with one of my best friends due to a different spelling), but when you look up the definition, ‘snobbish’ is in there. I’m totally not that, but I’m definitely fussy and overparticular.
LoL, We could meet and move things around! XD
      Do you ever do that?

I’m so glad someone else heard it that way. I LOVE that show. I can’t even say how upset I am that it’s over.

      1. authorleighmichaels Avatar

Yeah snobbish doesn’t have to go along with particular (that’s the word I prefer – my husband prefers anal HA).

Yes I DO move things around! And then they will still look a mess to anyone else yet still be perfectly organized – and more efficient, since that’s the reason for moving things around in the first place. Of course, if anyone else dare move anything, they’d better watch their fingers for the next couple of weeks, as they are liable to lose them.

      2. C. Miller Avatar

That’s usually what I say, but writing down anal seems so much worse than saying it, for some reason.

Haha, I second what you said. My husband has a tendency to ‘clean’ and then we’re never able to find what he moves again. The OCD part of me is always screaming on the inside. “I HAD THAT WHERE I WANTED IT!”
        XD

      3. authorleighmichaels Avatar

        YES!!! HAHA!

  5. Carrie Rubin Avatar

Oh man, there’s no way I can compete with that. I love that you write in a shed. What a great place to be left alone and let the imagination wander. Thanks for letting us take a peek inside it, and thanks so much for tagging me. Always a nice treat to be thought of!

    1. Carrie Rubin Avatar

Ha, after I posted my comment I saw literaryliason’s comment. It sounds like I parroted her. Guess we both love the shed idea!

      1. C. Miller Avatar

They were pretty different comments! And I’m definitely not complaining about more people saying the shed is cool rather than, “. . . . What?” (Or any variance of that.)

The shed is awesome. It’s really great to have my own space.

    2. C. Miller Avatar

It was a really fun thing to do. Pretty convenient as well because it’s been asked about. Now I’ll have this post to link people to when they ask about it. Is that lazy? >.>

No problem! Looking forward to seeing your post if you have the time to do it!

      1. Carrie Rubin Avatar

I have to admit I’m not very good about doing these tag posts. Okay, I’ll admit it, I’m horrible at it. But I did bookmark your post so that if I do, I can link back to it. 🙂 This one’s a little easier than some of the others, and I can probably get some humor out of it. 🙂

      2. C. Miller Avatar

I totally understand. I’m usually pretty horrible with it as well. This one was definitely easier (at least for me) and less time consuming. I’m sure you could make it funny!

  6. J. Lau Avatar

Lovely – I’m sure it helps to have a entirely separate place to write your work (and I presume it’s (much) bigger on the inside. Looks quasi-organized to me . I didn’t think of Psych or Robin Hood: Men in Tights, when I read that line, but Neil Patrick Harris. (Also didn’t know you smoked…)

    1. C. Miller Avatar

It REALLY helps to have my own space, and yes, it’s (MUCH) bigger than it looks. But I do have my part of it sectioned off.
I’m missing out on the Neil Patrick Harris part . . .

      And yep, I smoke. :/

      1. J. Lau Avatar

Maybe you should paint the outside of the shed blue…

NPH’s character in “How I Met Your Mother” does that “wait for it…” bit. I never got around to watching “Psych” for some reason…

      2. C. Miller Avatar

        Haha, maybe!

I’ve never watched How I Met Your Mother. I know a lot of people love it, but I just never sat down and watched any of it. I might give it a try at some point, but I have so many shows lined up in the ‘to be watched’ list, and I’m trying to get caught up with those.
I always loved Psych. It’s just silly and there are always lots of shenanigans going on.
